Tip Sheet: Maine Music Today
This is the state of music in the State of Maine. The best new music from Maine curated by professional music fan and inventor or Record Store Day, Chris Brown. Updated weekly.
New to the playlist this week:
Don Erdbrink – Blindside – This pleasant piano-led has a nice roots rock groove that would fit perfetly on an Assembly of Dust album. The song feels like a nice fall day and is a perfect lead off track this week.
Harry Zimm – Stuff and Things – Harry Zimm describe themselves as “sophisticated mellow yacht rock.” I discovered them last week when band member Andrew Rothlisberger appearance at The Studio Portland’s singer songwriter competition. His songwriting is much more interesting than “sophisticated yacht rock” implies. The band was based in Texas but Andrew lives in Maine now. I hope Andrew does many more solo shows.
Mali Obomsawin – Lineage (Live) – If you were lucky enough to see We Are Water: A Northeast Celebration in Portland two weeks ago, you surely were blown away by bassist, singer and composer Mali Obomsawin. This particular track is spiritual jazz and well worth a listen. She also is in a wonderful indie pop duo called Deerlady.
The Pretty Reckless – All Right Now – They covered this classic Free song for a Bad Company tribute. It is exactly what you think it would be. (BTW, Free and Bad Company had the same singer.)
Gnarly Darling – Barnflower – I am a sucker for roots rock bands with male and female vocals. If you are aren’t familiar with Gnarly Darling, you could think of them as Golden Oak with a tiny step towards classic country. This is their third single from their new album. I am looking forward to its release in a few months.
